The Wittig Report - on the Interface Between Life and Art
-------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the Wittig Report...
On the one hand there is 'Art,' and on the other hand, there
is 'Life,'
...and somewhere in the middle, they meet.
Yikes! For the first time since I began this newsletter, in
September
2000... I missed a deadline. No excuse, except that I was
busy, and
lazy, at the same time.
August produced 31 oil paintings, five pen sketches and one
art-related essay.
It is still summer, so I am producing oil paintings as fast
as I am
able, while the doors and windows are open, and I do not
have to worry
about asphyxiating myself. I figure I may have another month
to go,
before the oils are put away for the season.
This month, I have added a weblog... which is a bit like a
daily
diary, except that it is not in the least private, and I
miss entries
every so often. It is less formal than the rest of my
website, and has
the ability to accept comments from readers, to any days
writing.
The weblog link is on the NavBar, just above the link to my
eBay
auctions list.

For the sake of brevity, I point you to the thumbnail page.
This
month's work, are the 31 thumbnails on the bottom half of
the page,
the top half being last month's work. Clicking on any of the
small
images will open up the full image pages.

Article: September
"By selling my own work, and developing my own client
list, I am
learning what it takes to sell what I produce, and
developing my own
client list, and a history of sales, and a going rate, for
my work.
Galleries are, I would guess, deluged with prospective
sellers, most
of whom have no client base, and are unknown to the public.
By writing
and publishing articles, maintaining a newsletter, and
selling my own
work, I am making myself into a better prospective client.
If there is
one thing I have learned in my life, it is that people who
make
something of themselves, are sought after by others, and
people who
expect others to make something out of them, are not.
Therefore, I
will continue to make something of myself, and when I have
done a good
enough job, I will know I have succeeded, by the people who
seek me
out. Better to spend my time making something of myself,
than going
door to door, looking for someone else, to take on the task
for me."

Featured Website - Helen Charlotte Hill
In Helen's own words:
"I have been drawing since I was around 11 years old,
and it was a
nice hobby, but recently I started to take my art more
seriously.
Having worked in only pencil for 20 years, I took up
painting in March
2001 and am pleased with my progress so far. I am a single
mum, and I
am working towards supporting myself and my young son with
my art.
It's difficult to say why I create art - I just know that I
need to do so. Sometimes it's a need to
put down in tangible
form the real beauty that I see in something, sometimes it's
a need to
see something in a new way. I don't say that I'm a
'realist,' or an
'impressionist' or whatever, because my work is quite
varied. I do
everything from realism to pop art. When I look at my art, I
don't see
a clear style... or perhaps I see a few different styles...
I don't
know - you decide!"
